Description

Holy crap this took some time.

I'll just inform you people now- this is from a game. One of my all time favorites, in fact. And that game is Prince of Persia 3D, created by Red Orb and the guys behind the ORIGINAL Prince of Persia. Srsly.

PoP 3D, no matter what anyone says, beats the pants off of that crap series Ubisoft's come out with. Sure, that stuff has some limited entertainment value, but Red Orb's Prince of Persia, which came out in 1999, will stay with you long after you get up from your computer.

On that note, I'll say this: the computer version FAR SURPASSES the ports to the Dreamcasts and whatever else. This was back when computer games were better than console games on a whole crapload of levels. For one, there's the awesome battle music which, for some reason, is missing from the console versions. For another, the graphics are the shit and you just couldn't get the same levels of awesome on a TV screen back then. Even now, I doubt you'd get the same level of embience on an HD tv as you would on a good computer screen in the middle of the night when you should really be sleeping.

I loved that game to death and back and it's been one of the main inspirations for my artwork on numerous levels.

Why the hell dA doesn't have more PoP 3D fans is beyond me, but since I last looked, there's only one- ONE- Prince of Persia 3D fanart and it's a fucking redoing of the damn manual cover. I'm ashamed of you people; how could you keep the memory of games like American McGee's Alice, Earthworm Jim, Black and White, and Tomb Raider, but not Prince of Persia 3D?

Anyways, I'll be trying to draw up more fan art of the game to get the word out and stuff, but the amount of time that it took to get this guy just right (and I still regret some small details) was nigh back breaking. Okay, maybe it wasn't that long a time, but it was hard to put this down last night and get some frigging sleep without having the strong impulse to continue working on it. This character is one of the most meticulously detailed, so perhaps I can manage the others(This is one of the enemies with a specific illustration, which helped immensely when the time came to put in the ultra fine details.

Here are some links to give you an idea of the game and this particular character:

Opening Sequence/Intro Featuring a detailed render of the guard. Nifty.

One of my favorite tracks from Prince of Persia 3D

A rather level, but glowing, review by IGN on PoP 3D

In case you're now girding your wallet to get this game, here's a link to Amazon for the game: www.amazon.com/Prince-Persia-3…

And that's about all I have to add.

Oh, one more thing: Red Orb Entertainment (if it still exists in some form or another) owns Prince of Persia 3D and all of the intellectual property therein. And I suppose Jordan Mechner does, too.

I don't know what vision is so I gave you 3 stars for it. Because you wear contacts so your vision can't be that good I guess?

Anyway, as you know I love this piece. It's one you've obviously put a lot of effort into- and it shows a lot in the techniques you've applied. The careful shading of the cloth, the thoughtful placement of shadows on his torso and trousers as well as the choice of darker shades to give a 3D effect. It's an unusual subject choice by DA standards and I comment you for going against the curve.

The overall impact however is lessened by the fact that you cropped out the bottom part/didn't draw it- giving this a rather noobish look. This is further highlighted by the fact that you failed to think about points of note to the viewer- the main points of note are the top of his head which you made a bold detail that sticks out, yet is sketched in a slapdash way. The other is his cropped feet. That's where my eyes went anyway.

Colour and different mediums are something to consider for the future.
